Temple Of Moses The
first Jew to arrive in Miami was Samuel Singer, who migrated from
northern Palm Beach in 1895. He was the exception - most Jews were
moving in the opposite direction, from Key West in the south to the
northern city of Miami.
The first Jews in Key West were recorded in 1832. The identity of the
first immigrants is unknown.
The Key West Jewish community started after a shipwreck in 1884. Joseph
Wolfson's family sailed from Hungary after the accident and settled in
the area. The Jews were instrumental in the cigar industry, which
started in Key West. Many Jews and Cubans became close business
partners and friends, which led to Jewish support for Cuban
independence throughout the 1890s. Temple Moses is at 1200 Normandy Drive. It is a Sephardic Cuban synagogue; most of its members are of Turkish descent. |

National Women's Heart Day Heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women, killing more women than all types of cancer combined. Yet only 13% of women consider heart disease to be their greatest health risk. That’s why it’s critical that women get screened to learn their own risk factors for heart disease and take steps to reduce them. Women obtained free heart health screenings with on-the-spot results and advice on adopting heart healthy lifestyles at the National Woman’s Heart Day fair which is held every year in February. Sponsored by Sister to Sister: Everyone Has a Heart Foundation, Inc.®, the health fair is held at the James L. Knight Center in Downtown Miami. • Read the press release |

Initiated in 1982, CCAD serves a densely populated urban area which is predominantly African-American and Hispanic. Additionally, CCAD raises funds to send low income students to weekend and week-long summer camps, keeping kids from the streets during the long summer vacation period. Taking a long-term, community-based, holistic approach to drug abuse prevention, CCAD has secured funding for land and design of a future community center. The facility will provide a safe location for child care, assisted living for the elderly and a community activity center to support the drug-free lifestyle advocated by CCAD. CCAD invites gifts, bequests and contributions to support program operations, specific projects or capital expenditures.
